Deauville’s month-long festival comes to a conclusion on Sunday, when the prestigious G2 Grand Prix de Deauville is the feature, with last year’s winner Cocktail Queen (GB) (Motivator {GB}) returning to bid to provide owner Jeff Smith with more August glory in a month to remember. Second last time in the G2 Prix de Pomone over this course and distance a fortnight ago, the homebred may have more to do in this edition with the still-unexposed pair of Sumbal (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Loresho (Fr) (Halling) in attendance. The former, who sports the Qatar Racing Silks and won an uncompetitive renewal of the G2 Prix Greffulhe over a mile and a quarter at Saint-Cloud May 5, was staying on when fifth in the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix du Jockey Club when last seen at Chantilly at the end of that month. His Highness the Aga Khan’s Loresho also showed his ability over this course and distance when annexing the Aug. 9 Listed Prix de Reux, and has been coaxed along so far by Jean-Claude Rouget.
